A powerful tool to use with students to improve writing skills is 6 + 1 Traits® of Writing. The Iditarod is the perfect theme to provide a variety of opportunities for students to practice and improve their writing skills. The traits: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation are all traits that can be practiced and connected with the theme of the Iditarod®.
Try this Iditarod related lesson created by 2008 Teacher on the TrailTM Jane Blaile. The focus of the lesson is "Word Choice". CLICK HERE to view Jane's lesson.
After your students have completed this writing project, show us a sample or two from your student's work. We'll share student work samples as examples of good practices of teaching and learning. Getting 'published' with us at the website will be a great motivating factor for your students.
Send the student's work sample in an attachment to djohnson@iditarod.com. (Please use the first name only of your student and include your (teacher) contact information.)
TOTT Jane has many other interesting lessons for your students. Get on the sled with Jane, who will fly with the Iditarod Air Force from checkpoint to checkpoint during Iditarod 2008. To view more of Jane's lessons, click here.
