Important Dates to Remember!

TODAY: Begin your Iditarod unit of study if you haven't already! We have many ideas for you at the For Teachers and Iditarod Insider sections of the website. We'd also like to hear from you! What are your lesson ideas this year? Why do you use Iditarod in your classroom? What academic successes have come from your unit of study? What would you like us to provide to you so that your teaching connections are more empowering? This is YOUR educational tool. I look forward to hearing from you!
December 1: Applications for Teacher on the TrailTM are due to the Iditarod's Education Office by 5:00 P.M. on or before December 1, 2007. These applications are for the 2009 Teacher on the TrailTM. The selection process begins a full year before the selected teacher's year as Teacher on the TrailTM. This year's Teacher on the TrailTM is Jane Blaile from Phoenix, Arizona. You can view her lessons and journal at the Teacher on the Trail section of the website.
December 7: Curriculum Challenge: Enter this contest for teachers and earn prizes for you and your classroom.
December 7: Tabletop Decorating Contest: If you and your students can't be in Alaska, be a part of the Mushers Drawing Banquet. Create a tabletop or centerpiece design for our contest and have your project displayed on the tables at the banquet. RULES for this contest can be found at the Teacher Resources section of For Teachers. Create a design, send us your submission, and be ‘with us' in your design. Enter today! (Winner announced in mid December.)
December 2007: Iditarod Insider: Be a head of the race week rush and subscribe to Iditarod Insider. Bring the sights and the sounds of the race to your classroom with daily video segments added to Insider during the race. Prior to the race, review our video library which contains historic race video, study our fly by map, and discover curriculum connection that are in our educational materials section of Iditarod Insider. January 2008: Books to the Trail: Service Learning Project: Reading is a key ingredient to academic success. Help children become better readers. Sign up for this service learning project and be a part of inspiring students to read and enjoy literature.
January 18, 2008: Iditarider Musher Auction Ends! Bidding for a ride in the musher's sled for the first 11 miles of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race® opened on November 1, 2007 and will close on January 18, 2008. Challenge your students to follow the action of the bidding. Students can predict how much each sled will sell for as well as the total amount of money from the auction. Students can learn about each musher and write essays about which musher they'd like to ride with and why. How much would they pay for that ride? How much would you pay? Don't miss the excitement of the bidding!
February 26 - 29, 2008: Winter Conference for Educators: Make plans to attend the winter conference in Anchorage, Alaska. Earn university credit. Join educators from around the world in an experience that enriches the ability to connect your curriculum with the theme of the race while immersing yourself in the events surrounding the start of the race. February 28, 2008: Mushers Drawing Banquet: Are you wondering the starting order for the race? That information will be announced at the banquet. The information will be available the following morning. Celebrate the start of the race by having your own banquet. Tell us about it and send us digitals of your project.
March 1, 2008: Iditarod 2008 begins on March 1, 2008. The restart of the race is on the following day, March 2.
June 22- 28, 2008: Summer Idita- Camp for Educators: Join us in Wasilla for a conference experience that provides an authentic learning environment and a "hands on" experience to bringing the race to classroom education. Stay at a musher's kennel, learn about dog care and what it takes to drive a dog team and run a race. Connect your curriculum with the theme of the race while spending time in Alaska. University Credit is available. Don't miss this summer opportunity. Plan now! Attend!
