It's time to start a new school year, or soon will be anyway. Think about those pictures of the dogs which have been harnessed and led to the starting line of the Iditarod. They leap in anticipation. I've seen them look over their shoulders hoping for the signal from their musher that means they can RUN! Maybe you've heard them as well - the yips, yaps, yowls, and squeals that say, "I'm ready! Come on! Let's go!"
My wish for all educators is that you are feeling the same way about your new year. Get excited! Try something new. If you've never used the Iditarod in your classroom, start now. If you've used it in the spring, try to start something earlier in the year. It is YOUR school year, too; it doesn't belong exclusively for the students. You can have fun and learn and do new things right along with them. So join me on my journey through the school year, incorporating the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race into your curriculum in any way you can.
