Born in Binghamton, New York in 1959, Sue graduated from Cortland State in 1981 and earned a Master's degree from Kent State in 1983. A job transfer brought her to Alaska in 1986 to start up a health and fitness program for BP. In 1998, a mid-life career change brought Sue to Wasilla High School as a Physical Educator and softball coach. A competitive fast pitch softball player for most of her life, she had to look for new avenues of adventure and competition. Her life long love of dogs and the outdoors, combined with living in Iditarod's "backyard" made dog sled racing a natural fit. In 1989, she married Rich (because her mom always to her to "marry rich.") Complications from diabetes have kept Rich from climbing the "big mountains," but not from enjoying the best that Alaska has to offer. Sue says "Rich is my motivation for all things. He faces so many very difficult challenges every day: things the rest of us take totally for granted. Yet, his passion in life is to get out every single day and enjoy the Alaska outdoors with his best buddy, Canon (his pet border collie.)" Training for and running Iditarod is a tough challenge, but compared to what Rich faces every day, "it ain't nothing." My goal is to motivate al of my students to work hard, play hard, and accept challenges and make the most of the healthy body God gave them." Sue will be running Martin Buser's yearlings in Iditarod 2008. Rohn Buser will also be running Iditarod 2008. Rohn will be a senior at Wasilla High, enrolled in independent study Outdoor Recreation Class with Sue as his teacher. Iditarod will be the "ultimate field trip" for student and tea her. "I am honored to be running the best young dogs in the world." |
