Louis Nelson, Sr., 65, an Inupiat Eskimo, was born and raised in Kotzebue, Alaska. He began mushing about 13 years ago and run the Kobuk 220 and 440 more than 10 times. Louis lives at camp year round, located 25 miles north of Kotzebue), primarily living a subsitence lifestyle. He operates Snowy River Kennels and has about 35 dogs. He shares dogs with his son, Darin, who owns and operates Kobuk Lake Kennel near Kotzebue. Together they train dogs to race mid distance races. Louis is married to Lulu. They have one child living at home, Alexa, 15.. He is retired.
