ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - (March 17, 2008)
The Iditarod Trail Committee and the Alaska National Guard are teaming up to reach out to children in schools around the State of Alaska. "Stay on Track" is a program developed by the National Guard that helps Alaska's youth find positive alternatives to high risk activities. This collaboration includes a direct link from The Iditarod's Education Department web page to the Alaska National Guard's "Stay on Track" program.
"We are excited about this partnership that will allow us to reach out to educators and students across our great state. The Iditarod Trail Committee recognizes the importance of making smart choices to reach ones dreams and goals. The world class athletes that participate in the ‘Worlds Greatest Race' embody what we teach in our programs." said CW3 Scott Frickson, Rural Education Drug Program Director.
"What we believe is the most exciting element in this partnership is the ability for The Iditarod and the Alaska Guard to connect with children in both rural and urban communities throughout the entire year, not just during the month of March." said Stan Hooley, executive director of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
"Stay on Track" is a series of extensive programs that provides a curriculum with interactive lesson plans for educators in Alaska Schools. These lesson plans are designed to reach out to our youth in rural communities. The program includes a summer camp of team building opportunities at the Alaska Guards new E3 Challenge Course. (E3, Encounter Encourage Experience)
Last year, the "Stay on Track" program taught over twenty thousand Alaska residents about the dangers of substance abuse. The partnership between the Alaska Guard and the Iditarod will greatly increase awareness throughout the state by linking educators and communities with the same desire to help our youth make smart choices. These programs are effective and free of cost.
