If the First Day Sign Ups for the 2008 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race are any indication of what race fans can look forward to, then hold on to your seats. A record-breaking 56 mushers traveled from as far away as Norway to sign up during our annual Volunteer Picnic. The 2008 field includes some of the biggest names in mushing, as well as 16 rookies already. Read more about the 2008 sign up.
Mushers have until November 30, 2007 to sign up for Iditarod XXXVI. Learn more about musher registration.
More than five hundred volunteers from all over the world made their way to "Mushing Mecca" to celebrate the 2007 Iditarod. The picnic is held the last Saturday each June by the ITC to thank the men and women who truly make "The Last Great Race on Earth" a reality: the Iditarod volunteers! Alaska Govenor Sarah Palin was on hand to say hello to volunteers and the Alaska Millenium Hotel (official hotel of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race) put on a huge spread for all who came to join in on the food and fun.
2007 Iditarod Champion Lance Mackey left his kennel near Fairbanks last week to sit with the rich, famous and athletic at ESPN's ESPY awards. Lance was nominated for the "Best Outdoor Athlete" ESPY. Although he lost to endurance athlete Dean Karnazes, who ran 50 marathons in 50 states, Lance did manage to squeeze in a game of golf while in Hollywood, CA. Mackey was honored to play the round of golf, which was a charity tournament supporting cancer research, as a celebrity athlete picked from his group of ESPY nominees. As a cancer survivor, Mackey spends much of his time creating awareness about the importance of cancer research. Congrats, Lance! Read more articles about Lance's ESPY nomination.
