The Iditarod Trail International Sled Dog Race shall be an open class race for all dog mushers meeting the entry qualifications as set forth by the Board of Directors of the Iditarod Trail Committee, Inc. Recognizing the varying degrees of experience, monetary support and residence locations of a musher, with due regard to the safety of mushers and the humane care and treatment of dogs, The Trail Committee shall encourage and maintain the philosophy that the race be constructed to permit all qualified mushers who wish to enter and complete the race to do so. The object of the race is to determine which musher and dogs can cover the race in the shortest time under their own power and without aid of others. That is determined by the nose of the first dog to cross the finish line. To that end, the Iditarod Trail Committee has established these rules and policies to govern the race.
The entry fee for 2008 is $3,000 per musher.
Entry fees will officially received starting at 1:00 p.m. (note new time) on Saturday, June 30, at the ITC HQ at Mile 2.2, Knik Road in Wasilla. This will be done in conjunction with the volunteer picnic that day.
The end of the day on the 30th will officially be at 4:00 p.m. (note new time), at which time a drawing will take place for two free entry fees. All mushers who signed up in person that day and are present at the time of the drawing will be in the drawing.
Entry fees will be accepted through November 30, 2007 (note change in date). All entries must be postmarked no later than midnight on November 30 and it is recommended that any entries sent in November be sent return receipt requested.
Mushers will draw for their starting positions at the banquet this year. This is a change from the method used in 2006 and 2007 when mushers actually picked their starting number. All mushers signing up personally on June 30th before 4:00 p.m. will be in the first draw. Mushers signing up be the end of the 30th in any other manner and who are not present that day will be in the second draw. Mushers signing up after 4:00 p.m. on the 30th will be in the third draw for starting positions.
Make sure you read the rules carefully. There are other rules changes that are important for you to make note of.
