The Last musher is in, closing out the 2006 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The fact that 53 year old rookie musher Glenn Lockwood made it to Front Street in Nome under an absolutely beautiful Nome morning sky with no wind to speak of must have been Mother Natures way of acknowledging that IDITAROD XXXIV is over.
Glenn Lockwood was one of six mushers who started the race getting hammered with all kinds of wind and snow in Rainey Pass, and ended up the last three days dealing with just plain wind and white out on the Gold Coast. The kind of wind that constantly reminds you that this is a race that demands more than many are willing to give.
To some the IDITAROD is about winning, but to all who make it to Nome, and Front Street, this race is really about finishing. Glenn Lockwood, Steve Madsen, Katrina Pawlaczyk, Eric Rogers, Kim Kittredge, and Randy Cummins were the last six to make it to Nome. They began their arrivals a little after midnight. Each of them has a story or two that they undoubtedly share tonight at the Red Lantern Banquet. They will all relish the camaraderie they shared these last few days on the trail. For five of this last Six Pack this race will have even greater meaning. Lockwood, Pawlaczyk, Rogers, Kittredge, and Cummins are no longer rookies; they are now Iditarod Official Finishers.
Congratulations!
